I want my art to tell a story; to take it's viewers on their own journey through my work.
This ambition began when I was a child. From my first memories, my family often traveled throughout the western United States, where I was exposed to landscapes of sheer wonder and places of quiet power.
Building these early impressions into adulthood, I was inspired to share this view of the world by capturing both scenes of nature on photographic film and to represent the most moving images in my mind by painting on canvas. To these ends, I earned a BA in Art Education/Photography from the University of Florida in 1973.
Since then, while I still travel extensively, my time has been mostly divided between my Gainesville, Florida, studio and the out-of-doors, where I spend an extraordinary amount of time hiking and canoeing, relishing the natural world around me and finding endless inspiration for my art.
My background and job experiences have allowed me to experiment with a wide variety of materials and processes, both traditional and original, and have drawn me deeper into the creative arts. This has enabled me to solve problems I experienced with some traditional media, leading me to create new ones.
My cast paper art, for example, attempts to capture the textures of nature as other media cannot, while it also allows me to experiment with abstract represents of the interplay between humans and their environment.
In my view, one art medium cannot represent all that I wish to capture and share. Beyond creating a paper sculptures, I use photography to catalog the grandeur of a changing world and painting to represent the most important elements of a scene, as I see it.
